To celebrate her participation in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, the Beechworth community planted 2000 local native seedlings at this site.
The bird hide
The plantings in this sanctuary are crucially important in providing local bird habitat, and can today be appreciated from within the walls of the bird hide. Here our extensive wall charts will provide you with insights into both bird species and identification guidelines. In addition to seeking and seeing some truly incredible avian life, visitors can also take in the surrounding lake water views from this sensational vantage point.
Other vantage points
While the bird sanctuary is the must-see venue for any bird enthusiasts, the surrounds of Lake Sambell are rich with birdlife, too. The prolific reeds around the water's edge make for ideal habitat and birdlife is everywhere to be seen. Another locals' favourite spot for bird watching is at the Native Botanic Garden plantings next to the Chinese Garden, just below the dam wall.
Our selection of ceramic plaques celebrate the striking beauty of some of the more commonly spotted and easily recognisable species, that you may see outside of the sanctuary, in and amongst the lake precinct.
